How often should a septic tank be pumped in Lehigh Acres?

What are the signs a septic tank needs pumping?
Slow drains across the whole house, gurgling toilets, sewage odor near the tank or drain field, and wet or soft ground over the drain field are the usual ones. Any of these can have more than one cause, so an inspection helps confirm what is happening.
Why do my toilets gurgle?
Gurgling usually means air is being pulled through the drain because water cannot flow away freely. A tank that is close to full, a partly blocked line or a blocked vent can all cause it. The sound alone will not tell you which, so it is worth a look.
Why does my yard smell like sewage?
A smell near the tank lid or over the drain field means gas is escaping where it should not. It can come from a loose lid, a full tank, or a drain field that is no longer absorbing properly. If the smell comes with wet ground, call us.
What causes a septic backup?
A backup happens when waste cannot move through the system as fast as it arrives. The usual causes are a full tank, a blocked line, a broken baffle, or a drain field that has stopped absorbing. Which one it is changes what the fix looks like.
Can a drain field be repaired?
Often, yes. The right approach depends on how much of the field is affected and what caused the failure. In some cases the field can be restored, and in others part of it needs reworking. An inspection tells you which situation you are in.

How a septic system works
How does a septic system work?
Wastewater leaves the house and enters the tank, where solids sink and grease floats. The clearer liquid in the middle flows out to the drain field, which releases it slowly into the soil. The soil does the final treatment, which is why a clogged field is a serious problem.
What is the difference between pumping and cleaning?
Pumping removes the liquid and the material that comes with it. Cleaning goes further by removing the sludge and scum that cling to the tank itself, so the tank gets back its usable capacity. The two are often done on the same visit.
How do I find my septic tank lid?
Start with any paperwork from the original installation, which usually shows the layout. Failing that, look for a raised or sunken patch in the lawn, often between the house and the drain field. We can also locate it for you on the day.
What should I not put down a septic system?
Grease, cooking oil, coffee grounds, wipes of any kind, sanitary products and harsh household chemicals all cause trouble. So does sending a lot of water through at once, such as several loads of laundry in one morning. Wipes are the most common cause of blockages we see.
How long does a septic system last?
A well-maintained tank can serve a household for decades. The drain field usually has a shorter life because it depends on the soil beneath it. Regular pumping and keeping solids out of the field are what decide how long both parts last.
